BMW Dashboard Symbols and Indicator Light

The dashboard indicator lights tell you about the condition of your vehicle. These lights are on the instrument panel to help you check the status of your vehicle at a glance. The following is a list of common problems that may cause these BMW warning lights to come on:

  1. Key-in-ignition warning light : This light will come on if you try to start your vehicle with the key in the ignition and the driver’s door open. The light will also come on if it’s been more than 10 minutes since your last drive and you leave your keys in the ignition while exiting or locking your vehicle. This helps prevent someone from accidentally starting your car while it’s unattended. To reset this system, turn off the engine and remove all keys from the ignition. After 10 seconds, restart the engine as usual.
  2. Service Engine Soon or Service Vehicle Soon: These are two different messages that have similar meanings; they both warn you that service is required soon for your vehicle’s engine emission control system. The message will display for about 2 seconds when you start your vehicle and then disappear until it needs to be serviced again (after about 15 miles [25 km]). For further information, see Emissions Control System Check under Emission Control System Maintenance in chapter 4 of this manual.
  3. Check Control: If this light is on, it indicates that the check control system has detected a problem with your vehicle. The exact nature of the problem will be displayed in the odometer display. If this light remains on after driving for 10 miles (16 km), see your authorized BMW center as soon as possible.
  4. Check Engine Light: This light comes on when there’s something wrong with your car’s engine. If it stays on, that means there’s a problem that needs immediate attention. It can also mean that you need to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery terminals for at least 10 seconds.
  5. Airbag Warning Light: The airbag warning light indicates that the airbag system is off and/or the passenger airbag deactivation switch is in the OFF position. If the light stays on after starting your vehicle, it indicates a fault with the airbag system. Have your vehicle serviced immediately by a BMW dealer. See “Airbag System” in Section 5 of this booklet for more information. Parking Brake Indicator Light: The parking brake indicator light illuminates when you apply the parking brake. When this indicator lights up during driving, it indicates that there is a malfunction in the braking system and needs immediate attention.
  6. Safety belt: The safety belt reminder light will illuminate on the instrument cluster when the ignition is turned ON, and it will turn OFF when the driver’s door is opened. When the safety belt reminder light illuminates, it means that the driver and front passenger seat belts are not fastened. In order to keep your vehicle in safe condition, make sure that you fasten your seat belts before driving. If you do not fasten your seat belts while driving, a warning buzzer will sound intermittently as long as there are people in the front seats who are not wearing their seat belts.
  7. Battery Charge Indicator: This light indicates the current state of charge for your battery. You will see one of three colors: green, yellow or red. If you see a solid green light, then your battery is fully charged and in good condition. A yellow light means that your battery needs charging soon. If you see a red light, then your battery is nearly depleted and requires immediate attention from a professional mechanic before it becomes too damaged to function properly again.
  8. Oil Pressure Indicator: This light shows how much pressure is being applied to oil inside the engine’s cylinders at any given time during operation. When the oil pressure drops below what is considered safe by BMW engineers, this light comes on as an alert that there may be an issue with either engine lubrication or cooling system performance (or both).
  9. BMW Steering System (Integral Active Steering): The steering wheel is equipped with an indicator light to indicate whether the system is activated or not, and if there are any faults. The indicator light can be found on the right side of the steering wheel and will illuminate when active. When active, a yellow ring surrounds the outer edge of the left side of the indicator light.
  10. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS): The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is a system that automatically controls braking. It uses wheel speed sensors to detect when a wheel is about to lock up and then applies the brakes to that wheel, allowing you to maintain steering control. If you have anti-lock brakes, the dashboard indicator light will come on when you apply the brake pedal in an emergency situation. The light will flash if the ABS has been activated. The ABS warning light should be off when the engine is running and you are driving at normal speeds. If you see this light on while driving, it could mean one of two things: there is a problem with your anti-lock brakes or there is a problem with your tire pressure sensors.
  11. Brake Fluid Level Indicator: BMW brake fluid level indicator light is located in the instrument cluster. This light will illuminate when the brake fluid level is low. This can be caused by a leak or because of excessive use, such as frequent braking or driving on rough roads. If the light illuminates, stop driving immediately and check the brake fluid level. If the light illuminates while driving, it may indicate an internal fault with one or more of the brakes.
  12. Tire Pressure Monitor: The Tire Pressure Monitor light will illuminate when one or more tires are significantly underinflated. The warning light is accompanied by a message in the instrument cluster and a tone alerting the driver of the problem.
