Why shouldn’t you drive around with a chipped windshield?

Your windshield is the largest and most important component of your vehicle. It’s also the only thing between you and the elements. If it’s damaged, take action immediately.

A chipped or cracked windshield can reduce visibility and make driving more dangerous by creating blind spots that obstruct your view of the road. Driving with a damaged windshield could result in a ticket or fine if you’re pulled over by police.

If you have a crack in your windshield, get it repaired right away before it spreads and becomes worse.

The following are some reasons why you shouldn’t drive around with a chipped windshield:

  • It can lead to much larger problems down the road. A small chip may seem harmless, but once that chip gets bigger, there will be more cracks in your glass which can lead to leaking and structural damage to your vehicle. This can make driving difficult and dangerous because your visibility will be impaired and rainwater will leak into the cabin when you are driving in the rain.
  • You could be ticketed by law enforcement officers if they see your windshield damage while driving on public roads. In fact, some states require drivers to have their windshields replaced after hitting certain objects (like potholes) or after having their car strike another object in an accident.
  • Flying debris – A small rock or pebble can cause serious damage if it hits your car’s windshield at high speeds. Flying debris can easily shatter the glass and cause serious injury to people inside the vehicle. It can also cause injuries to pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists who may be walking or riding on the road when your vehicle passes by them.
  • Increased wind noise – Driving around with a chipped windshield will allow more wind noise into your car’s cabin which could make it difficult for you to hear traffic warnings such as speed limit signs.
  • It makes driving at night difficult – If your windshield is cracked or chipped, it may be hard for you to see clearly at night when lights shine through them because light refracts through the cracks or chips. You may not see other vehicles coming up behind you until they’re too close to avoid hitting them if they brake suddenly or turn unexpectedly into your lane of traffic. The same goes for pedestrians who might step off a curb unexpectedly into your path.

How long does it take for a chipped windshield to spread?

Chipped windshields can spread fairly quickly, but it’s not uncommon for them to take weeks or months to develop into full-blown cracks. The speed at which a chip spreads depends on many factors, including the size of the chip, the location of the chip and the material used to make your windshield.

Smaller chips can spread more quickly than larger chips. If a stone hits your windshield at just the right angle and velocity, it could break off small pieces of glass from your windshield. These fragments could then be kicked up by other passing vehicles and hit other cars or pedestrians in front of you.

Large cracks in windshields can spread much more slowly than smaller ones because they’ll require more force to break off additional pieces of glass. This means that large chips might take days or weeks before they become fully grown cracks, while smaller cracks may appear overnight if they’re located near an edge of your window.

How do you stop a windshield chip from spreading?

If you have a small chip in your windshield, it’s best to have it repaired as soon as possible. This will prevent the chip from spreading and causing further damage to the glass. If you don’t get it fixed immediately, water can seep into the crack and freeze, which could cause the windshield to break.

The longer you wait to get your windshield repaired, the more likely it is that the damage will spread. If a crack is more than an inch long, then it’s time to take action. The longer you wait, the more expensive it’ll be to repair your windshield.

Here are some recommendations by professionals that can help you fix the windshield temporarily.

  1. Clean up any loose glass or dirt from the area with a towel or paper towel before treating it with sealant. The cleaner your windshield is, the less likely it will be for particles or dirt to get trapped inside during application, which could lead to further problems later on down the line.
  2. Use a razor blade or utility knife to lightly score around the edges of the chip so that it will be easier for sealant to adhere properly to both sides of the crack. Don’t cut through the glass though! Just score enough so that when you put sealant on one side of the crack, it will stick well.
  3. Use toothpaste to fill in the chip. This is an old trick for filling small scratches and nicks in your car’s paint job. It works because toothpaste is made of fine abrasives that smooth out scratches and fill in small imperfections in the paint job. If toothpaste doesn’t work for your windshield, try using fingernail polish instead.
  4. Apply window tint over the chip to hide it from view. Window tinting can hide small chips from sight but it won’t prevent them from spreading if left untreated for too long. To remove dirt or debris from your window before applying tint, use rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth or rag.

How much does an average cracked windshield repair cost?

The average cost of repairing a cracked windshield is between $100 and $300. It’s important to note that the price of repairing your windshield will vary depending on the size of the crack and its location. If you have an insurance deductible, you’ll most likely be paying out-of-pocket. However, if you don’t have an insurance deductible, it’s possible that your insurer will cover the cost of repairs.
